Hunger Banquet Reflection

The Hunger Banquet takes place once during Martin Luther King, Jr’s day of recognition.  Sometimes it takes place during the school day and all of the middle school classes take part while other times it takes place during the evening and students can come with their families.  A major goal of this banquet is to have people think about the distribution of world resources and the hunger that so many people have each day.  Thanks for attending this important event.
Choose one of the following options:
1. Written Reflection (choose 4 of the following questions to address in your reflection)
Please write a one-page reflection that addresses the following points (it does not have to be in this order but should flow from one idea to another):
1.              Provide a dictionary definition of hunger.  Now, break this definition down into your meaning.  What do all the words in the definition mean?  What are causes of hunger?  What are results of hunger?
2.              Describe the hunger banquet.  Describe the “tickets” that someone could have had.  What did each ticket represent?  What “ticket” did you have in the banquet?  What did you eat?  What did you drink? Where did you sit?  How did your ticket compare to that of other people?
3.              How did you feel during the banquet?  What do you think is the goal of the banquet?  Do you think the banquet meets this goal?  Why or why not?
4.              Why do you think people in Portland are hungry? What are your hopes for feeding people that are hungry?
5.              What was the biggest idea you took away from the Hunger Banquet experience?

2. Creative Piece (please answer question #5 from above to include with your art piece)
How can you capture your experience and provide someone with a glimpse into the feelings you had during the Hunger Banquet?  Using at least one page, make a creative piece using photos, drawings, a poem or any other idea that you may have.  The goal is to make a beautiful and creative piece that invokes the spirit of the banquet and your knowledge of world hunger issues.
