We managed to almost not get rained on today...only hailed on slightly.  Students participated in a Quest around the neighborhood looking for signs of the history of the area.  We then spread out on a walk towards 43rd searching for aspects that created the identity of the neighborhood.  An interesting discussion ensued when we returned to the class -- Do the residents of a neighborhood affect the identity of that neighborhood more than the infrastructure of a neighborhood?  The debate heated up as the students discussed who or what was to blame for a neighborhood that is deemed 'unsafe'.  This discussion will serve as a great launching pad for after spring break when we start delving into the issues involved with urban planning.

Today marked the first day of the International Livable Cities Conference!  Students were welcomed to the conference; read articles about the amazing projects they have done in the fields of housing, transportation, waste, economics, parks&rec/public art, and Food/Safety/Health; did some mingling to meet other urban planning professionals attending the conference; and headed to Hawthorne to do some mapping of a neighborhood street.  Tomorrow morning our keynote speaker, Rex Burkholder, will be introducing the Brownsfields Challenge to the students.  We are continuing to discuss the question: What makes a city livable?

Today was an exciting day! We got a surprise message from Riki Ott (she was the keynote speaker for the Energy Teach-In) and got to Skype with her.  She has been down in New Orleans and has been observing what is happening with cities recovering from Katrina and  is interested in what we think makes Portland a 'livable' city.  We also participated in Sound the Alarm at 12:30 to raise awareness about climate change by making a LOT of noise outside on the school yard. Our middle school students also got to help our 1/2nd grade buddies prepare for their student-led conferences...so cute!

Field Study Tomorrow:
We will be traveling after lunch to Hawthorne to do some mapping of the amenities along the street.  Students will be at school for lunch.
