Today was a day of finishing things. We finished the read aloud and finished making the "hot spot" posters.

There is no new homework for core class tonight. Read read read, and keep track of your reading in your reading log.

This morning we began warming-up towards our persuasive piece. We will be gathering evidence/data and forming our opinions and next week begin writing a letter on whether or not the United States should raise it's cap on the number of refugees it allows per year.

Today we continued the read aloud, which almost had me crying when Marie's dad got shot by the rebel soldier. (I held it together...but I don't know if I'll have such luck as the story intensifies.) We also had a guest teacher come. Lynn Vandercamp came and taught/reviewed with the students how pollutants in the water affect animals and humans. The homework tonight relates to this.

-Read pages 6-10 in the refugee packet and answer the questions
-Complete worksheet relating to Lynn's Bio-accumulation lesson

And as always, read at least 20 minutes each night and record your reading in your reading log.

Choose one of the following prompts to write about:
1. You are a journalist who is hiding in the trees watching the soldiers steal the truck. Write your article telling the outside world what is going on.

2. You are a soldier in the group that stops Marie's family. What are you thinking as your lead soldier hurts Joseph and takes the family's money and truck? Are you in agreement with what he is doing or not? Could you stop him if you wanted to? Write your thoughts.

3. You are one of Marie's sisters. What are you thinking as you creep into the bush hoping to get away from the rebels? Write down your thoughts until you reach the truck.

We went to the Real Life Exhibit today. It was a striking experience, one that brought up strong emotions. A big thank you to the volunteers who helped make this trip possible. I so appreciate the parents of this class and your willingness to be involved in so many ways.

We will be having a Tea Party next week on Tuesday, January 10th. The students have been given a Tea Party Role. Each student will take on the role of a refugee. They will read about the refugee and share that person's story as if it is their own. The homework tonight is in preparation for that day.

Welcome Back! It was great to see everyone today and hear some highlights of winter break. We launched our January study of refugees today with a silent discussion of photos and quotes from refugees and a discussion about what rights humans around the world should all have. I am excited about all we will be learning and exploring around this topic.
