What? Watch a minimum of 2 movies about the Civil War era. Look over the list with your parent/guardian to choose appropriate films. Check the rating.
When? Complete the watching and the assignment below by Monday, April 4th, 2011.
Assignment for each film—written in paragraph form with specific details:
- List the film title and the year it was released. Write a brief summary of the story in your own words (do not copy and paste from a web site).
- Describe life during this time by focusing on the architecture, fashion, transportation, education, etc. How do these areas of life relate to wealth and position in society?
- Focus on interactions between people in terms of gender, race, socioeconomic level, etc. How does that compare with today?
- How was war portrayed in this film? What was it like for those fighting and for those not fighting?
- Was slavery a main theme in your film? Describe the impact of slavery on the characters in the film.
- Do you notice any stereotypes or prejudice in this film? Describe if yes.
